The Rotary Club of Buderim - Youth Service ReportJuly 2008 – June 2009 A MIXED YEAR OF
SUCCESS AND DISAPPOINTMENT At the start of 2009, it was apparent that the majority of members of Interact would be in Year 12 and/or were very much involved in extra curricular activities. Although new membership drives were executed, the success rate was poor. A few additional fundraisers were held and subsequent donations made to worthy recipients. but membership continued to decline to a level that could not sustain the viability of the club. Similar, but not as serious, levels of decline have been reported by other Interact clubs in our area. I believe in the concept of Interact and would recommend that any future Interact club to be supported by us should be in a regional Public High School. possibly Mountain Creek High School or Chancellor College. The main reason for advocating this is that the majority of the school population lives in the school catchment area, thus allowing for much greater social activity to take place. This, I feel, would result in a greater melding of club members. On the brighter side. we have had continued success with National Youth Science Forum attendees. The Club selected and provided financial support to two students to attend NYSF at the end of 2008 and both have benefited substantially from this experience. We have put forward two very promising students for evaluation to attend the NYSF in 2009-2010. As most of you will be aware. I will be stepping down this year as Youth Director after being involved with the mentoring of youth for over 40 years through the Scouting movement, industry and, for the past six — most enjoyable - years with the Rotary Club of Buderim. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has assisted me over the years, but particularly to Bob Nelson for his unending support during this difficult past twelve months. I look forward to assisting the Youth Committee whenever required. PETER SIMPSON |
