Young Chef's Challenge
The club. in concert with Sunshine Coast TAFE conducted
the very successful Young Chefs Challenge in May. This is the third year
this innovative program has been run by Rotary on the Sunshine Coast.
It is targeted at high school students who are interested in a career
in the catering industry. Teams of two chefs prepare a three course meal
that is judged by a bevy of successful local chefs. The results were:
- 1st Place Jake Harrison and Tabitha Kempf— Mountain Creek
SH School
- 2nd Place Adam Meeuwsen and Jason Wolter— Treloar —
Maroochydore SHS.
- 3rdPlace Angus Fergusen and Justin Ade — Immanuel Lutheran
College
The meals were beautifully prepared and presented. The
judges were fulsome in their praise of the culinary skills shown by the
contestants. They each chose a young chef and offered them work experience
in their restaurants. The winners of these awards were:
- Adam Meeuwsen — At The Hungry Feel Buderim
- Dannielle McVey — At Harry's on Buderim
- Jake Harrison — At the Boatshed Cotton Tree.
Vocational Visits.
The club made a visit to the Sunshine Coast University sports centre where
we were shown around the ten million dollar centre opened last year. The
facilities are state of the art and appear to be well utilised by local
schools, community groups as well as the university students and staff.
Vocational Trivia Night.
In November the vocational service team held a Trivia night at Chancellors
Tavern to raise funds for the young chefs challenge. The night was one
of great fun and fellowship for those who attended.
Sunskills 2008.
The club provided helpers for the Sunshine Coast TAFE sunskills program.
This is an annual event in which the TAFE showcase their facilities, courses
and career options they provide for school leavers. It is run over two
days and caters for up to 1000 local sunshine coast students.
Vocational Talks.
We were privileged to listen to number of vocational talks by club members
and their associates. Liz Smith spoke about her most interesting career
in pharmacy. Ralph Ding also gave us an insight into the financial planning
world.
